Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco – Santa Maria: 53 km cycling (Optional Rafting: 100 soles from April to November)
We will pick you up at your hotel. After picking up the whole group we will leave Cusco, we will have a one and a half hour bus ride through the spectacular plateau of Chinchero and through the Sacred Valley to Ollantaytambo. We will stop at a small local restaurant where you can refresh yourself, get a quick meal or snack, and buy anything you may have forgotten to buy in Cusco, after this we have to get back on the bus and travel an hour and a half to Abra Malaga, which is located at 4,350 meters above sea level. We will provide you with all the equipment you need (bike, gloves, elbow pads, knee pads and helmet), followed by a briefing by our experienced guide. Then we start a fun ride, all the way downhill to Santa Maria (1,430 m.a.s.l.). On the way you will see lots of different landscapes, panoramic views and different micro-climates. We will arrive in the village of Santa Maria for lunch!
After lunch, we have the afternoon free to rest or explore the village. As an optional highlight you can choose to participate in the rafting excursion (100 soles). This will take you down the Quillabamba River for approximately 2 hours or 25 km and includes class 2 and class 3 rapids. In the evening you will enjoy dinner and spend the night in Santa Maria.
Day 2: Santa Maria – Santa Teresa: 20 kilometer hike
We start with a delicious breakfast and then we prepare for the hike in the high jungle. For this we need insect repellent, sunscreen, and good energy to discover the flora and fauna that await us on this adventure. We will pass through local plantations on the way to reach the authentic original Inca trail at the highest point. You will observe spectacular landscapes and views, and learn about Inca history. Please note that this is not for people who suffer from vertigo (ask your guide for special help or advice for 20 minutes on the hike).
After leaving the Inka trail we have an hour and a half to walk through the jungle forest until we reach the village of Cocalmayo where we can enjoy our delicious lunch with a local family. Then we have some time for a siesta before we continue walking to arrive in 3 hours to the Cocalmayo Hot Springs. You can decide with your guide, how long you want to enjoy the baths before dinner and sleep in the village of Santa Teresa.
Day 3: Santa Teresa – Aguas Calientes
We will start at 6 am. After a delicious breakfast, we will get ready to continue walking to Hidroelectrica and then continue to Aguas Calientes.
There is an option in Santa Teresa to go ziplining, all passengers are divided into 2 groups – those who booked ziplining and those who did not. Those who booked ziplining will be transported to the place where this activity will take place for about 3 hours approximately. This group will go by bus to Hidroeléctrica. The rest of the group will continue the hike of approx. 3 hrs. more through the valley until arriving to Hidroeléctrica, where the whole group will meet again. Here you will all have lunch. After a short rest you will continue walking along the train road and enjoy the beautiful scenery for approx. 3 hours. You will arrive at the town of Aguas Calientes at approx. 4pm. Here, in the Hotel with hot water, wi-fi, you will spend the last night. In the evening you will meet our guide at the restaurant, where a delicious dinner will be waiting for you. You will also have a briefing with your guide about the next day.
Day 4: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes – Ollantaytambo – Cusco
In the morning you will have two options to go up to Machu Picchu; you can either hike for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes or take the bus for approximately 30 minutes.
Once you arrive, our guide will take you and inform you for 2 hours around the Machupicchu Citadel, enriching your knowledge with the Inca history. There is a lot of information that our guide will teach you.
After the guided tour, you will have free time to explore the citadel on your own. If you want to climb Huayna Picchu, a very popular climb with spectacular views, we recommend booking three months in advance. (There is only a daily limit of 400 visitors per day, if you do not want to miss the opportunity it costs an extra $25) The round trip walk to the top of Huayna Picchu is about an hour and a half. It is definitely worth it for the breathtaking views from the top! Another alternative is to climb Machu Picchu Mountain. This is a new option that allows you to see Machu Picchu Citadel from the highest peak. It is less crowded, so you don’t have to book ahead of time (It has an extra cost of $20).
You will have to descend to Aguas Calientes in time to take the train back to Ollantaytambo, 1 hour and 45 min. approximately, then you must leave the train station to take the bus back to Cusco, 1 hour and a half approximately to get to the city.
